Every home is a personal archive, storing the memory and past from the trace of materiality, creates a spacial narrative from the trace of living. It is the shelter, a place of belonging that curated by the individual from their understanding of home and comfort. Rooting in a foreign land is a challenge of identifying home, the hunt of elements and materials to construct a new image of home can be a journey of weaving connection to the foreign land.
This research is telling the story of a Chinese-Indonesian architect — Herianto Sulindro, who immigrant during the 50s amidst the Chinese massacre in Indonesia, he pursue his education in architecture at Berlin and spend half of his life in Europe working as an architect and city planner in Zurich. Building a relation to the city through his occupation, his knowledge brings him closer to Zurich in a different way, compare to other citizen who lived here for their life time. My research focused on his house on Scubertstrasse in Zurich, the first property he owned in the foreign country, to initiate studies of home, not as a static image, but as a living archive, penetrating the notion of time, space, cultural landscape and personal narratives.
Invited by SUAVEART, I worked closely with Herianto’s daughter Linda from 2022 winter virtually and in person. From her words and description, enable me to outline the silhouette of Herianto not only as an architect, but also as a father and member of the Kho (許) family in Indonesia. Linda presence become a crucial aspect of my research and presentation. As a Zurich born Chinese-Indonesian, Linda holds a different perspective on Indonesia compare to her father, yet she also inherits the spirit of remaining connection with the family in Indonesia and certain cultural traditions. We work closely together, investing considerable time in cleaning and restoring the house to its former appearance, delving into Herianto’s design and renovations of his home. Through our conversation and leading by massive materials (objects, letters, documents…etc, please visit the “publication” for more information) , the curation of home from Herianto become more cohere, vivid and clear.
